About the project

The  Project “Agroecology as an instrument for the conservation of the terrestrial landscape and for the resilience of rural communities inserted in the protected areas and buffer zones of the Natural Parks of the Islands of Santiago, Santo Antão and São Nicolau” aims to favour the dissemination of agroecological knowledge and the practice of integrated, sustainable and intelligent agriculture as a means of conserving the terrestrial landscape and strengthening resilience in communities located in the protected areas of the Islands of Santiago, Santo Antão and São Nicolau (Cape Verde). 

The Project's target group is Rural/Community Associations located in the six Natural Parks and their respective buffer zones:
Santo Antão Island: Cova/Rª Torre/Paúl Natural Park; Moroços Natural Park; Tope Coroa Natural Park. Santiago Island: Serra Malagueta Natural Park; Rui Vaz/Pico de Antónia Natural Park. São Nicolau Island: Natural Park of. Monte Gordo

The total value of the project is 230,714.00 USD, the Small Grants Program of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) finances 56% (130,000.00 USD) and 44% (100,713$00 USD) of counterparts of the proponents Association of Friends of Nature (AAN) in partnership with the Center for Rural Studies and International Agriculture (CERAI). 

In its implementation, it has the support of other associated entities, such as the National Institute of Agricultural Research and Development (INIDA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) of the Government of the Republic of Cape Verde.

The Project's general objective is to promote the dissemination of agroecological knowledge and the practice of integrated, sustainable and intelligent agriculture as a means of conserving the terrestrial landscape and strengthening resilience in communities located in the protected areas of the Islands of Santiago, Santo Antão and São Nicolau (Cape Verde).

Specific objectives

1. Promote inclusive dialogue, participatory systematization of good practices and innovation in the construction, sharing and management of agroecological knowledge among rural communities in the protected areas and buffer zones of the Santiago, Santo Antão and São Nicolau Natural Parks;
2. Propose and disseminate among producers in the protected and buffer areas of the Natural Parks of Santo Antão, Santiago and São Nicolau agroecological solutions for the restoration and fertilization of soils, agricultural integration, preservation and control of pests and diseases without use of contaminants;
3. Start new instruments and new business opportunities to increase agricultural income, add value and include young people and women living in the protected and buffer areas of the Santo Antão, Santiago and São Nicolau Natural Parks.

The following activities will be carried out within the scope of the project:

• Opening of the Facebook Page, Carrying out Opening and Closing Events and Meetings of the Project Monitoring/Local Assessment Committee -  Facebook:  Agroecology in the Protected Areas of Cape Verde;
• Carrying out Participatory Rural Diagnosis Sessions in the six (6) protected areas and buffer zones;
• Preparation of the Catalog of Good Agricultural Practices in Protected Areas and the Interactive Map on good practices and popular agroecological knowledge;
• Training session on participatory processes, knowledge management/sharing, creation/management of Community Knowledge Multiplication Centers (NCMC);
• Creation of NCMCs and the Agroecological Knowledge Sharing Blog;
• Holding Agroecological Knowledge Fairs and Round Tables on innovative solutions;
• Studies/Evaluation of Biopesticides (in partnership with INIDA) and presentation/dissemination;
•Elaboration, Publication and Printing of the Collection of Notebooks on agricultural businesses and services for family, community, associative or micro-enterprise management;
• Support for small family, community and associative projects in the field of agroecology, creation of new income and innovation;
• Creation and Dynamization of a Participatory Guarantee System (SPG) model in Santo Antão;
• Preparation of the Training Plan in Ecological Agriculture and Sustainable Agricultural Integration and Carrying out Theoretical Sessions and Practical Workshops;
• Elaboration, Publication and Printing of the Collection of Notebooks on agroecological techniques and handling;
